Surprisingly 24 willing workers turned up on a very wet Saturday (18mm of rain) to participate in the joint venture between JRA, Westside Church and the Centenary Cycle club. As probably the last correspondence sent out by the present JRA Executive, recognition will go to pastor Jim Litteral and Robyn Luscombe, thanking their members for participating. With the reduced work force, two projects were dropped and the group was split to tackle the pickup of litter along a 4 km section of the Centenary Bikeway and the clearing of over growth along Sumner Road near the Centenary Highway. The youth group from Westside church of Christ collected a dozen bags of litter and removed other objects such as car bumpers, tyres and shopping trolleys. Mc Donald’s at Jindalee supplied drinks for the youths These duties will have to be done 4 times a year when JRA’S application to Adopt-A-Road (bikeway) is granted. The public liability that accompanies this adoption will allow for safer protection for our beautification team members when planting out the Andaman Strip.  The Sumner Road crew created 2 very large piles of dead timber and grass ready for removal from a skip donated by John Carroll from the Mt Ommaney Shopping Centre and by Safe Link – the consortium building our new Highway to Ipswich. Yamaha Golf Cars in Sumner Road donated a buggy for our drinks coordinator Haydn Sargeant but unfortunately it was far to wet for Haydn to venture out. Mitre10 donated generously in the form of accessories for our working party. JRA members and friends, Andrew Spilar, Sue Mc Dougall, Julie and Wayne Williams, Cr Matthew Burke, Gary Johnson and grandson Sam Tweedale toiled hard to first level the site and then truck the material to the bin at Mt Ommaney Centre. Sue’s gym training was evident with the fine effort she put in. In fact the over 55 team members all toiled very well under the damp conditions and no doubt most would have woken on Sunday with aches and pains. Thanks also to Gary for the use of his utility for the week end. We are indebted to Melody Street resident, Rowdy Krause, for right of passage through his property with many loads of vegetation.
On Sunday when Clean Up Australia team coordinator Wayne was clearing out the undergrowth near the bikeway behind Mitre10, he was joined accidentally by 3 Mt Ommaney staff members from Mc Donald’s looking for litter along the bikeway that no longer existed. With their help another 3 ute-full loads of vegetation hit the bin.
It is no coincidence that Sumner Road near the Centenary Highway was chosen to make JRA’S presence felt as the duplication of the bridge to Darra will be high on the agenda of the incoming Executive Committee. JRA has applied to Main Roads to be the convener of the public forum to be held in the next couple of months. JRA members will be notified of this night forum and are encouraged to attend. You can lend your support now by downloading information (create a link) and send in your time lost experiences encountered at this bottle neck. No doubt when the cyclist activated lights are installed at the cross over of the bikeway extension to Ipswich Road over Sumner Road, there will be some very disgruntled motorists. Night preparation for this project is currently being done this week. Surely there is a better solution for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to share our roads but no doubt at a greater financial cost.
Over 4 tonnes of vegetation and 12 bags of litter collected was a fine effort for a very wet day.
