Mt Ommaney Shopping Centre Update PDF Print E-mail
Written by Wayne Williams

Now that most of the earthworks are completed for the southern car park and the temporary footpath installed, JRA residents are finally experience less stress.  Of course the residents that reside along the nature strip will still have ongoing activity and disturbances for a couple of weeks yet.  By December JRA residents will have a finalized footpath and better pedestrian crossings to walk upon when entering from Andaman Street.

JRA has complimented the Mt Ommaney Centre Management team for addressing some issues that were over looked and very important to us in their original Development Approval Conditions.  To most of us, the cooperation by preventing construction trucks from using the Andaman entry point was paramount.  With the introduction of new contractors for finalization work, there has been an increase of uninformed truck drivers contravening this condition.  John Carroll has been alerted to these offences and corrective action is being taken.

Remember also, it is only construction trucks that are banned from using our streets. As ridiculous as it may sound, a tandem petrol tanker or an existing business’s semi trailer type delivery truck falls outside of this condition.  Council inspectors tell us that they can’t stop them as it is a public road even though they mount and damage traffic calming chicane islands. This stance makes a mockery of the Local Traffic Signage.  Police can take action with fines and demerit points against the offender but they must witness this event happening. You can contact the police yourself for action - good luck.  Rest assure, your executive is working towards correcting this loop hole.

The ongoing assistance John Carroll and his team to rectify dust issues and placate local Galleon Street residents is most appreciated.  Some time early in the New Year JRA residents will have the freshly planted southern nature strip (behind the Galleon Street residences) back in use.

JRA has requested that as soon as work is finished all construction material should be removed and not just be left there as a storage area for the contractor’s convenience while waiting for their next work project. When being critical of what is occurring on this site, members should be reminded that we have quite a few of our residents that have businesses or work down there.
We can’t stop progress but it can be managed best through diligent awareness and constructive negotiations.

The Mitre10 footpath is now being well patronized. Does this mean we are returning to do business or aren’t the alternative accesses via the Centenary Bikeway or Dandenong Road being used as much?  It also helps in avoiding dangerous situations by having professional traffic controllers on duty near the Andaman entry gates.

MT OMMANEY CENTRE CONSTRUCTION PROGRESS
Latest estimates are that the Coles car park will be completed in late October (not for public use until Dec) with the Coles Court area extension due to open for the Christmas rush.  Progress is well advanced in the sealing of the southern ring road with final drainage almost completed up near the Andaman entry.

Work should commence shortly on the new traffic light controlled intersection at Dandenong Road and Kentucky Fried. BCC workers are presently attending to footpath improvements and turning lane lengthening.

When this intersection and the southern ring road is completed and customers return in droves, your executive will be closely monitoring customer’s choice of entering and departing via this point as against using the Andaman entry.

AMP will be consulting with JRA later in the month to discuss what plans they have for final tree and shrub planting along the easement area of their southern boundary and along the Mt Ommaney Ck. Catchment area beside Mitre 10.
